World Book Day and World Book night

Next week is both World Book Day (March 3rd) and World Book Night (March 5th) - there are Quick Reads being released for it, some of which look pretty decent. The adult books are priced at £1.99 and include books by Mike Gayle and Sheila O'Flanagan, and the kids ones are £1 and include a Dr Seuss book and a special edition Winnie the Pooh book.

Books are available from lots of bookshops and supermarkets, and the adult books are also available on Amazon right now. Enjoy your read!

Celia Birtwell lunch bag at Boots

Really hoping these aren't sold out by the time I make it into town again - this is the problem with living in a market town and being on maternity leave!

They're £1 and proceeds go to Macmillan Cancer Support and are on sale until 22nd March. Get me one and I'll give you a quid?

The star charms are pretty nice too - but I want the bag.

Pears - gorgeous little beasts.

Last week I made the usual mistake of buying pears - as Eddie Izzard says:

Pears can just fuck off too. 'Cause they're gorgeous little beasts, but they're ripe for half an hour, and you're never there. They're like a rock or they're mush. In the supermarket, people banging in nails. "I'll just put these shelves up, mate, then you can have the pear." … So you think, "I'll take them home and they'll ripen up." But you put them in the bowl at home, and they sit there, going, "No! No! Don't ripen yet, don't ripen yet. Wait til he goes out the room! Ripen! Now now now!"

Anyway. I bought a bag of pears which have now ripened just that bit too much. So I've found this wonderful Ottolenghi recipe which I will be trying out this weekend as my lovely husband seems to have bought out Tesco's supply of Craisins as well...

(NB if you'd like to watch the Eddie Izzard sketch in full, have a look here. It's worth it.)

I got you....crème de menthe.

One of the best comedy series of all time (in my opinion anyway), Black Books, sadly came to an end in 2004, however you can relive it all by purchasing this bargain box set from Amazon. £7.49 for 18 episodes of comedic genius from Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig, plus guest stars Rob Brydon, Simon Pegg, Peter Serafinowicz, Nick Frost, Kevin Eldon, Martin Freeman, Jessica Hynes, Lucy Davis and Olivia Colman amongst many others - a list that surely proves how brilliant this series is. If you've never seen it - get this now.

The Gentle Art of Domesticity and other treats

As I sat, sleeping babe in my arms, I wandered over to Amazon with a new book in mind - something calming, creative and beautiful to suit my contented frame of mind.

I love The Gentle Art of Domesticity by Jane Brocket - a compendium of baking, crafts and the pleasures of a simple life, illustrated wonderfully with stunning photography. So, I began my tour there and followed the Amazon Recommends links. I'm now craving the following:

Perhaps it's time to crack open that Amazon gift voucher I've been saving. A girl needs a treat once in a while, right?

Jelly baby jelly

I love this - it's a little creepy but amazing. Now, whether to purchase one for baby shower number two (hahahaha!)? Thanks to the always brilliant Domestic Sluttery for the heads up.

Framed babygrows

Googled this today after hearing from my friend Esther about someone that had done it - and found this lovely article with some beautiful photography. And I'm jealous of the nursery.

No use crying over expensive milk...

As many of you will know, the government don't allow any incentives on milk for babies younger than 6 months, so any loophole in this ruling is very welcome in our house (a house that loves Boots and Tesco points, neither of which you can collect or spend on first milk). This week I discovered that Ocado offer a £15 off discount for first time shoppers when spending over £75. I gave it a go on a basket solely filled with first milk - and it worked! Ten boxes of Hipp Organic 800g and 9 cartons of Hipp Organic Hungry Baby 200ml, price matched with Tesco, for £60.36 after the money off. That works out as the cartons for free and then around £5.50 a box for the powder, a saving of almost £1.50 per box. That's maths I like.

Try it for yourself: www.ocado.com/new using voucher code VOU7969913 (valid until 10th April). Or...just spend it on wine.

Sophie Dahl's banana bread recipe

I wanted to share this recipe as I made a variation on it last night for tomorrow's Give Yourself a Hug Teddybear's Picnic in aid of the NCT - I added walnuts and sultanas but it's delicious as it is. Plus, it's incredibly cheap to make, especially if you can find a load of reduced bananas, or you've bought some for the urchin and he's refusing to eat them...

Plus, I get to share the gorgeous Teacups, Cupcakes blog (as I couldn't find the recipe on any kind of official Sophie Dahl page) which is full of beautiful recipes and vintage teacups (why do I never find beautiful teacups in the charity shops of Glossop?!)

I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Welcome to Baby Scrumptious

I decided to start this blog as a way to catalogue and communicate information about my interests - baking, babies and bargains! I hope you can spare some time to take a look around and that you can take something away with you, whether it be a recipe for a delicious cake or a discount on nappies.
